7 things you need for Botanical Oedo Island Photographer's Paradise

Updated: Feb 3

Oedo Island

One morning we took off for Oedo Island. Oedo Island is a privately owned island that has been created into a botanical paradise for tourists. From Gujora Beach the dock to ride out is about a 15-minute walk. There are many departures throughout the day and tickets can be purchased shortly before departure at the dock or online. For the four of us, we paid around 100,000 won. This trip includes a short cruise, a quick side stops to see some uninhabited islands from afar, and about a two-hour exploration time slot of time on Oedo Island.

Once on Oedo Island, you'll walk up the steep slope through botanical gardens to get to the best part--the Acropolis-esque pavilion and garden! Fair warning though for photographers, it is bright white with the afternoon sun--I was shooting in the 1/1000s. If you are on your own, a tripod would be a great tool to bring along. If you are wishing to get a solo photo with no tourists just wait back a bit and you'll be able to get a break in between the boats unloading passengers.

I've visited Oedo Island a few times and to be honest, I think this Grecian ispired garden is the most remarkable part of the island trip, and while there is still a lot to be seen on the island, time spent here is time well spent. Nearby the Grecian inspired gardens ice cream, lemonade, and hotdogs can be enjoyed for around 5,000 won for any item. It feels like there is a lot to be explored afterward and that you might run out of time but the photos here come out best.

Checklist for Odeo Island

  1. Hats for everyone! It is really hard to keep those eyes open for photos--see above!

  2. Water. Sold on the boat and on the island but bring your own.

  3. Snack. It is a bit like going on a hike. While food is sold on the island it's nice to have something ready just in case. There is a lemonade stand, ice cream stand, and two cafes on the island but not a lot of time to enjoy them.

  4. Tripod--then everyone can get in the photo.

  5. Comfortable shoes--eveywhere is paved but some uphill walking shoes are great to have. I didn't have that much trouble in the flip flops but a heel would be tough.

  6. A clock. Make sure you don't miss you're boat back!

  7. For best photography a later in the afternoon trip would be great. We went at 10:30 am and arrived around 12.
