Drive through main street in Cheongdo and you will see a sign for Nakdae Waterfall. This is how we first found out about it on one of our bike rides through Cheongdo. We later went returned by car but it would be a nice uphill bike road, a nice place for a hike, and especially a great place for an MTB.
Cyclists could make it uphill but would need to park and walk from the parking lot. Also that means strollers are a definite no. The hike up from the parking is a rocky pebbled road and uphill but manageable for kids. The hike from the parking to the waterfall is about 10 or 15 minutes through up the side of a gorge.
Anyway, we took a car, followed the one-way-at-a-time-only winding road with two very hard 180 degree curves. Take is easy ascending and descending this mountain road.
Once you get up you'll find a very small parking lot, you'll see an unattended park guard house and you'll walk up from there.
Below you'll see the river and the lower part of the waterfall in the gorge. It doesn't take long to hear the waterfall in the distance and then see it through the trees. Going up the mountain you'll see a wooden bridge to the left or you can keep going up the rock path. Either way will get you to the same place but definitely choose one for going up and the other for going down. We took the rock path up and the wooden bridge and staircase down.
The wooden walkway will lead you around through the other side of the gorge where you can see more little waterfalls and may be a few chipmunks scurrying around.
At the waterfall, there is nothing stopping you from jumping under it and taking a waterfall shower. Under the waterfall there is a shallow pool of water and there is nothing stopping you from jumping in there either. The water from the waterfall doesn't hit that hard despite it's towering height.
Past the waterfall, you will see an up stair case that you can take for more hiking.
Best time to go: The best time to do for this in summer is after a bit of rain from the monsoon season. Then you can be sure that you are going to see a waterfall and not a rock wall. I've seen photos of the waterfall in winter frozen like an ice statue that look pretty cool.
